The Gmuca Family

Pictured above is the family of Martin J. Gmuca and his wife, Mária Anna Tokárová.  Martin was born in 1863 in the small village of Kluknava in what was then the Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  He was the middle son of Ján Gmuca and Judita Kollárová. His older brother, Jozef, remained in Kluknava, became a railroad watchman, married Mária Susová, and raised his family at the railroad station.  Descendants of Jozef and Mária still live in the area surrounding Kluknava and we in America have reestablished contact with our Slovak cousins.  Click here to learn more about the branch of the family that did not make the journey to the United States.

Not everyone decided to come to America. We are lucky to have reconnected to descendants of the Gmuca family who remained in Hungary, through its transition to Czechoslovakia and, finally in 1993, the independent country of Slovakia.
